Taste of Nation – Houston May 2nd, 2010

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Thanks to Foodbuzz Raymond and I got to attend Taste of Nation – Houston tonight.

Share Our Strength®’s Taste of the Nation® Houston is the nation’s largest and finest culinary benefit supporting the effort to end childhood hunger in America. Funds raised are granted to organizations that work to end childhood hunger, both in communities where Taste of the Nation events are held and in other communities across the country.

The event was held at the Houstonian Hotel and Spa.  Over 50 restaurants participated in this year’s event.  As you know I had knee surgery on Friday, so I limped my way through the event with Raymond’s help.    We had a great time and enjoyed meeting many of the restaurant’s chefs and learning about what they have to offer.  Note that due to my vegetarian diet I did not sample everything pictured here.

We started the event with a quick stop at the Dessert Gallery’s table,

Olivette at the HoustonianOffered seared Ahi Tuna and French Macaroons; being a vegetarian I skipped the Tuna and had a couple of their delicious Macaroons.

2010 BP MS-150, April 17-18

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

My Houstonian friends (bloggers and NON bloggers) don’t forget that I am giving away a chance to attend the Taste of Nation- Houston a charity event to end childhood hunger.

* * * * * * * *

Well my friends, the BP MS-150 is this weekend. I have to be honest and tell you that when I first started training for it the idea of riding 20 miles scared me… but halfway through the trainings I realized 20 miles is really nothing… its not even worth stopping for a rest stop in the first 20 miles.

I have to admit that I still can’t blieve I won’t be riding my bike this weekend :(

The good news is as of today, Raymond and I together have raised $1625 –  Once again Thank you all for your support.

As I mentioned before I will be volunteering for the event instead, so I still get to hang out wiht all of my friends who are riding.  I also get to meet Kelly on Sunday for a fun day in Austin :)
I will write a full re-cap of the weekend Sunday night or Monday, depending on how things go.  I bought 3 boxes of Brownies.. so I am baking brownies right now to take with me since we a lot of our friends are riding this weekend, I figured they would all appreciate a little extra snack :)

As for my eats, I have been feeling weird lately, I wake up completely full and then at about 9-10 I feel starving.   I really need to push myself back on a schedule.. this breakfast at 9 lunch at 2 and dinner at 7 schedule is not really working for me.

I wasn’t a very good eater today, I had 3 slices of veggie pizza at a meeting and a slice of cake.  oops.   I really need to be careful specially now that I don’t get to go to the gym everyday because of my knee.

The surgery is scheduled for April 30 and I get to get back on my bike on June 1st.  I have been looking online to find rides for the memorial day weekend that I can participate in.  :)

Dinner was very satisfying, brown rice with sautéed veggies and raw tomato and red cabbage with a side of steamed kale and creamy avocado dressing.

Creamy Avocado Dressing:

-  0.5 Avocado
-  Juice of Half of a lime
-  1/4 of Jalapeño
-  Salt and pepper to taste

– Put everything in the food processor and blend until creamy :)

We have a busy day tomorrow to get ready for Raymond’s long ride.

Have a wonderful weekend.

March Is National MS Education & Awareness Month

March Is National MS Education & Awareness Month

As you know Raymond and I are participating in the BP MS-150 in April.    This past weekend we rode our team’s (Team Shell) annual ride.   Before we started the ride our team leader had one of our team members speak to all of us.   I don’t know her name and I don’t know how old she is… she looked very very young as I am sure she is…

Our team member started to tell us that she was diagnosed with MS in December and it has been an uphill battle for her everyday.  She was holding back tears but you could hear the pain in her voice as she went to tell us how much she appreciated all of us participating in the ride and raising money.   She said that because of all the donations through out the years the MS society has set up a 24 hr hot line for patients to call and get support, which she said she appreciates and calls often as this is all new to her and she is scared.

Listening to her as she spoke about her diagnosis and hearing the pain in her voice teared me up… as I went through my rides this weekend I reminded myself that even though the wind is killing me… or that I am tired… or hungry… all of that is nothing compared to all the battles my teammate is going to go through and I made it my goal to finish every mile.

Here are some facts about MS:

-  MS is usually diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with a risk in the general population of approximately 1/750.

Two hundred people are diagnosed with MS every week and more than 2.5 million people are living with this disease worldwide.

-  Like other autoimmune diseases, MS is more common in women than men.

-  The most common symptoms associated with MS include visual disturbances, balance and walking difficulties, debilitating fatigue, weakness, numbness, and bladder dysfunction.

-  While there is currently no cure for MS, there is a great deal a person can do to manage the disease and maintain their quality of life. The best place to start is with reliable information about MS.

Now that you now some of the facts about MS I need you to help me raise awareness about MS this month.  Our blogs are very powerful and we all get hundreds of readers every day.   Take a minute this month and help me spread the word.

To help us (Raymond and I) with our fundraising goals the wonderful people at Klean Kanteen have donated 2 bottles that I will be raffling here during the month of March.

About Klean Kanteen:

Toxin-free materials
100% stainless environment
Fair labor standards
Refill, reuse, reduce
Eco-friendly & Recycleable
BPA Free Caps

Here is how the raffle will work:

DONATE $1 to either Raymond or My fundraising page and leave me a comment telling me you have made your donation.

If you choose to donate more than $1 you can gain an entry per $ up to 5 entries for the raffle which means if you donate $20 you still get 5 entries, but if you donate $2, $3, $4 & $5 you get 2, 3, 4, 5 entries respectively

Raymond’s Fundraising Page

I would really appreciate it if you spread the word via your blog, email, twitter, facebook or any other means.   Help me make this a successful Fundraiser.

Please NOTE that you do not have to have a blog to participate in this fundraiser!

I will select two winners on Wednesday March 31 using random generator!
